Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
