As any prominent prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry to include fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types actually cover numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary game development, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
